The Department of Transportation (DOT) has a division called the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA).  Within that is the Office of Vehicle Safety and Compliance (OVSC).  This office is the office that works with registered importers, show or display cars, race cars, and other safety regulations.
