Direct Import Vehicles Over 25 Years Old To Hawaii : Updates : HB 737

The following information is from Scott Waracka. He has been fighting hard to get 25 year old vehicles exempted in Hawaii.  Please go and support what he is doing.

Aloha All,
I hope this email finds you in good health and ready to fight for our rights to own Direct Import Vehicles here in the state of Hawaii.

With that being said I am please to announce that the bill has been processed and given the number HB 737. This is the beginning of a long journey and I truly believe we have a shot at this. It will take us all to make this happen.

As this journey unfolds it is starting to take shape of something out of a movie. This morning while going thru the bills introduced in the state House of Representatives as well as the state Senate I have come across a bill (SB 819) that is in opposition to HB737. At first look I thought this bill might also work in our favor but once reading it again I realized that this bill if passed will make the law even vaguer and leave it up to the interpretation of the state DOT which is 100% against these types of vehicles being registered in Hawaii.

So here is what we need to do: We need to all start our letters of support and when available submit testimony in support of HB 737 and letters and testimony against SB 819.

The best way to do this is to figure out who your districts representatives are via the states web site. Check here for your senator http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/members/legislators.aspx?chamber=S and here for your Representatives http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/members/legislators.aspx?chamber=S once you have your representatives email address and or phone numbers it is time to start sending emails. Like I have said before I think it is best if you write your emails in support of HB 737 as personal as possible. One great point to focus on is that Hawaii is the ONLY state that does not register these vehicles based on FMVSS and that the NHTSA says they are federally legal and that the NHTSA is the safety authority for all vehicles in the USA. It is also a good idea to CC Representative Aquino in your emails of support (repaquino@Capitol.hawaii.gov).

If you would also like to submit testimony in person as soon as I have a hearing date and time I will forward it. As for testimony online please visit http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/ set up and account and find these bills. Once a hearing date is scheduled we will be able submit testimony online. Although emails to your politician help show support the online testimony shows all committees that will hear this bill that there is a driving force behind HB 737 and a driving force against SB 819. I hope you all will take the time to submit testimony online as this is just as important as emails.

I truly believe if we all can get our close friends and or family remembers to send emails and submit testimony via the states web site we can get HB 737 to pass as well as defeat SB 819. With that being said please reach out to all who you think would be interested in this bill and explain to them what is needed to be done. I thank you all for your support during this campaign to make it easier for all residents of Hawaii to own a Direct Import Vehicle.

Thanks,
            Scott-Michael Waracka
